The Federal Ministry of Environment\u00a0announced in Abuja\u00a0 Monday announced that heavy rainfall which may result in\u00a0flooding is expected in 14 states from July 30 to Aug. 6, in the northern part of the country.<\/p>\n

The ministry has appealed to government and people of the prone areas to take all necessary precautionary measures to avoid any disaster.<\/p>\n

In a statement by the Ministry, the affected states are Benue, Kebbi, Gombe, Zamfara, Yobe, Jigawa, Borno, Katsina, Bauchi, Kano, Sokoto, Kaduna, Taraba and Adamawa.<\/p>\n

Many towns are also expected to be flooded in these states.<\/p>\n

It added that adherence to similar warnings in the past had saved\u00a0lives and property.<\/p>\n

Recall the effects of the 2012 flood to the nation’s economy.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Director-General of the National Emergency Management Agency, Mr. Muhammed Sani-Sidi, said Nigeria lost N2.6tn to the 2012 flood disaster.<\/p>\n

Sani-Sidi said the disaster, which resulted in 363 deaths, affected seven million people, displaced 2.3 million others and damaged 597,476 houses.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe comprehensive Post Disaster Needs Assessment conducted from November 2012 to March 2013 with the support of the World Bank and Global Facility for Disaster Reduction and Recovery, United Nations, Development partners and relevant Ministries, Departments and Agencies put the estimated total value of infrastructure, physical and durable assets destroyed at $ 9.6bn.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe total value of losses across all sectors of economic activity was estimated at $ 7.3bn. The combined value of these damages and losses was $ 16.9bn.\u201d the agency said<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
