•Raid suspected attackers’ hideout

Following Monday night’s attack on Sabon Gari area of Kano in which many people were killed and others critically injured, security has been beeped up in the city again.

National Mirror’s investigation yesterday revealed presence of fierce-looking security agents comprising mostly policemen and soldiers in the city.

The security personnel consequently engaged in rigorous screening of motorists and commuters on major streets and strategic locations with increased vehicular patrol by men of the Joint Task Force (JTF).

The Monday’s attack, however, prompted the return of road blocks and security barricades most of which were dismantled about three months ago following relative peace in the troubled city.

Long queues of vehicles were seen in some part of the city as a result of the measures embarked upon by the security personnel to ensure adequate protection of lives and property.

National Mirror also discovered fresh check points erected by the JTF, especially in the just hit Sabon Gari and the routs leading to areas considered flash points.

It will be recalled that residents began to heave sigh of relief following the gradual return of peace in Kano as there was no record of violence for three consecutive months.

It was learnt that in apparent response to the improved security situation in the commercial city, the police dismantled all road blocks and security barricades within the state capital so as to enhance free flow of traffic.

As at last week, most security barricades, especially those leading to security formations, which had been targets of the Boko Haram attack, were reopened for vehicular movement. The huge presence of police and military personnel in some parts of the city, according to investigation, facilitated reduction in crime rates in the city.

Surveillance patrol by men of the JTF was more noticeable, particularly in suspected hide out of criminal and identified flash points.

Investigation showed that the development greatly improved the hitherto chaotic traffic situation in the state capital, which had been a source of worry to motorists and commuters alike.

Some of the affected areas that enjoyed free flow of traffic following the dismantling of road blocks were the ever busy Ahmedu Bello Way, which has a mini military base, Airport Road by Hajji Camp, with another military depot, leading to Sabon Gari, a predominantly non-indigenous community.

It was learnt that the fresh Kano attack, however, necessitated fresh security measures to fortify the city against further invasions by gunmen and gangsters.

National Mirror also gathered that the JTF and the police had begun massive raids of hideout of suspected criminals
