\"\"Persistent smuggling must be curbed by all means to allow local industries and entrepreneurs to grow appreciably in Nigeria as it is the dragon hindering the growth of the much desired local industries.<\/strong><\/em> The area controller of customs in Oyo \/Osun command, Richard Oteri who made this disclosure at the Ibadan area headquarters of customs said the illegal activities of smugglers has affected several industries in major sectors like agriculture, textiles, automobile and other key indicators of the Nigerian economy. He added that the command alone has made a record breaking 181 seizures with a duty paid value of almost 320 million naira in less than 2 months. The command took journalists on a tour at the Oyo\/Osun area command of customs in Ibadan moving from one warehouse to another, with various prohibited items amounting to a whooping duty paid value of 315 million naira. Items like fairly used assorted cars, used tires, imported rice, vegetable oil, shoes, bags, fabrics, and even imported African prints were all displayed. 3 suspects were also arrested in connection with some smuggled rice at Saki axis in Oyo state; they however claimed ignorance of the crime. The area controller of customs, Oyo\/Osun command however assured that his men will not rest until smuggling is wiped out, as he admonished young people who engage in the nefarious activity to embrace sincere labour instead of the get rich quick syndrome which cripples the economy. He added that investigation is still on-going to unmask those behind the smuggling ring under the command.<\/p>\n
