Borno state government at the weekend commenced massive fumigation and clearing of drainage as well weeding of areas within the Maiduguri metropolis previously under the stranglehold of the outlawed Boko Haram sect.
The sanitation of the areas came on the heels of the call by the state government to all the fleeing residents who had been held hostage by the outlawed sect, to return back to their homes. The former enclaves of the sect, which were deserted at the peak of the crisis have started showing signs of life as some of the residents who fled the areas have returned.
Officials of the Ministry of Environment and the Borno State Environmental Protection Agency (BOSEPA) were seen evacuating and clearing the drainages and fumigating the streets.
The affected areas comprising of Budum, Kofa Biyu, Shehuri, Abbaganaram, Gwangbe and Old Jere, which were earlier deserted and became inaccessible due to insurgency, are now become a beehive of activities, with residents gradually returning to their homes.
The Deputy Governor, Zanna Umar Mustapha, who inspected the areas, urged people to be calm as normalcy had been restored.
\u201cAs you can see life has returned to Maiduguri and those that fled these areas who were dens of the Boko Haram have returned.
\u201cI appeal to those that fled at the peak of the crisis to return back to their homes as their security is now assured and the insurgents have either been captured or are fleeing.\u201d
He praised the effort of the youth vigilante group and the Joint Task Force who have both collaborated to check the excesses of the Boko Haram sect.
He also assured the returnees that the state government will quicken the evacuation and clearing of the drainage and cut the outgrown weeds so that the areas can be once again habitable.
Mustapha who also gave words that the vandalized electrical transformers will immediately replaced, promising that the government will continue to work with both the youth vigilante group and the JTF to ensure that the gained ground in terms of security is not lo<\/p>\n
