Security personnel at the weekend arrested no fewer than 28 suspects for vandalising the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) pipeline at Ogere Remo axis of Ogun State.

The security personnel comprised men of the Nigerian Army and those of the Nigerian Security Civil Defence Corp (NSCDC). The suspected vandals, including an herbalist and a woman, were arrested by the security personnel while siphoning Premium Motor Spirits (PMS) popularly called petrol behind the Water Works along the Ogere/ Ajura Road.

Addressing journalists yesterday, the Commanding Officer of the 35 Artillery Brigade, Brig.-Gen. David Ahmadu, described the incident as an economic sabotage. Ahmadu said investigation revealed that some security operatives connived with the vandals to damage the NNPC pipeline.

He said: “What has happened is actually the collaborative efforts of security agencies and I am using this opportunity to sound a note of warning to persons who may want to indulge in such act of criminality that no act of criminality will be allowed in Ogun State and Nigeria in general as far as pipeline vandalism and any other act of criminality is concerned.”

Also speaking yesterday, NSCDC Commandant, Akinwande Aboluwaye, said that the agency initiated a joint raid with the Army due to what the NSCDC officials experienced two weeks ago when they raided the place.

Aboluwaye said: “About two weeks ago, we carried out a raid in this same Ogere. Some suspects were arrested and charged to court. But we felt that was not comprehensive enough, that was the reason we called for joint operations with the Army and I think this is a successful one.”

He said seven vehicles, 363 jerry cans, a long hose and some substances believed to be charms were recovered from the vandals. At the Alamala Military Barracks where the suspects were paraded, the vandals alleged that some policemen from the Ogere Division connived with them to vandalise the pipeline.

One of the suspects, a 20-year-old Monday Bitruce, accused one Sergeant Adamu attached to a police station in Ogere as an accomplice in the oil theft business.

Claiming that he joined the illicit business two months ago, Bitruce said about five policemen recruited him and his colleagues for the pipeline vandalism. He said: “We were working for Sergeant Adamu. This is the second time I will be working for him.

The first time I was paid N6,000, but he has not paid me for this before Army came and scattered the place.” Twenty-two-year old Ibrahim Wasiu was another suspect. He claimed that his friend, one Owoseni, lured him into the business. Wasiu said: “Before the arrest, I could count five to six policemen who were with us.

I was lured by my friend popularly called Owoseni to join the group. I joined the group because I did not have money. We were about loading the second vehicle when the Army came to arrest us.”
