Bayelsa State Governor, Seriake Dickson, yesterday bemoaned the huge wage bill of civil servants in the employ of the state government.

Dickson regretted that the wage bill his administration was battling to reduce was still fraught with fraud.

According to him, some employees still collect salaries from two pay points.

The governor, who spoke at the 15th edition of his monthly transparency press briefing, disclosed that civil servants who were due for retirement were still collecting salaries, a situation which he described as very disturbing.

Dickson was reacting to allegation by a journalist that some civil servants in the state Ministry of Transport were collecting double monthly salaries.

The allegation created a shock wave in the Banquet Hall of the Government House, venue of the briefing.

The Commissioner for Transport, Mrs. Marie Ebikaki, who appeared ruffled about the stunning allegation, however, claimed to have a clean record in the ministry’s salary voucher.

The Deputy Governor, John Jonah, who gave details of allocation and expenditure for July, said the government received N17.96 billion as allocation for the month.

Jonah said civil servants’ salary for July was N3.96 billion, the state’s Internally Generated Revenue, IGR, was N658.39 million while total savings in the bank was N19.96 billion.

Meanwhile, the state government yesterday signed business agreement with three foreign firms to build two fish farms and an international golf course in Yenagoa.

The projects are expected to be completed within 12 months.

Dickson disclosed that the fish farms would cost $ 10.5 and $ 24.6m respectively, while the golf course would gulp $ 17 million.
