Dignitaries including the governors of Niger State, Dr Muazu Aliyu Babangida, his Kwara and Oyo states counterparts, Alhaji AbdulFatah Ahmed and Senator Abiola Ajimobi respectively, yesterday paid condolence visits to the Lagos State governor, Mr. Bababtunde Fashola (SAN), over the death of his father, Pa Ibrahim Ademola Fashola.

The visiting governors eulogised Fashola’s late father, describing him as one “who provided Nigeria with a worthy son and performing leader.”

The governors who spoke separately when they called on the Lagos governor at the State House, Marina said Pa Fashola had done very well and lived a fulfilled life, urging everyone to continue to ensure sustenance of the legacy he left behind.

Governor Babangida, in his remarks, called on Nigerian leaders to “eschew personal bitterness to ensure that the country succeeds”, adding that now is the time for everyone to come together to reinforce peace.

“We want peace but we don’t want peace of the graveyard. We want peace that will bring progress. Nigeria is a multi-religious country and we must do everything to ensure that people do not make us fight between Muslim and Christians.

We must run away from people who have no ideas”. The Niger governor stated that the ethnic group that anyone finds himself in or is born into is not his making but one chosen by God.

He implored Nigerians to ensure that they elect only leaders who can talk about ideas and also move the country forward. Governor Fashola while responding, said perhaps if anyone had asked, he would have said if nobody came, the Governor of Niger State would have come to condole with him because he has been “a true brother and a dependable one at that.

“Those who know you know where you stand when things are difficult; your character is predictable and the type of leadership that you have provided in your sphere of operations which have reverberated across the country is the type of leadership that we need: a leadership of courage, a leadership of issues and a leadership of development.

“Those really were the things our father represented; as you have said, he was a man of peace. He served Nigeria in his own small space too, reaching out to people as a journalist when he was the advert manager in the Daily Times and as a Secretary of Surulere Local Government.”

“We have seen from the very different coalition of visitors who have come to honour him the kind of bridges that he built and the commitment that we can make is that we will be sure to keep those bridges alive. It is a big responsibility and I think my siblings and I and the entire family will rededicate ourselves to the sustenance of those bridges,” Governor Fashola assured.

Governor Ahmed, while speaking, prayed for the repose of the soul of Pa Fashola and prayed that God will continue to strengthen the Lagos State governor as he continues with the task of providing for the needs of Lagosians.

Governor Abiola Ajimobi, in own remarks, traced the filial and warm relationship that exists between him and the late Pa Fashola family, saying the Fasholas are his in-laws and prayed that God grant the departed, eternal rest.
