The Economic and Financial Crimes C o m m i s s i o n (EFCC) yesterday quizzed former Kwara State Governor Bukola Saraki for alleged financial infraction while in office. Saraki appeared at the EFCC office in Abuja shortly after he arrived from Saudi Arabia where he had gone to perform lesser Hajj. Sources told National Mirror that Saraki was immediately whisked to the interrogation room on arrival where he was drilled for several hours by a team of operatives.

It will be recalled that Saraki had denied having any issue with the antigraft body, dispelling any talk about his investigation as mere speculations concocted by the media. When contacted, the EFCC spokesman, Mr. Wilson Uwujaren confirmed that the former governor submitted himself for interrogation.

Uwujaren was, however, not categorical whether the former governor would be detained or granted administrative bail. Asked which office Saraki was being investigated, he said he could not be specific because he was not part of the investigating them.

On whether the former governor could be granted administrative bail, he said: “I cannot be specific on that. As I speak with you, I am at home.

However, he was still being interrogated when I left the office at about 5:0pm.” Clearing the air on why it took the anti-graft commission over two years to investigate Saraki’s tenure in office as governor, Uwujaren said: “Investigation is not time-bound.

It is when you are sure of what you have gathered before you can make any arrests or invite an accused person.”

He denied the allegation that Saraki was being unduly vilified because of his perceived political differences with President Goodluck Jonathan. Uwujaren said: “We are not affiliated to any political party and our operations are non-partisan. I can tell you that this case has nothing to do with politics. We are working based on the evidences we have gathered.”
