The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps in Plateau State on Monday said it had apprehended five pipeline vandals in Bassa Local Government Area of the State.

While parading the suspects in Jos, the State Commandant of the NSCDC, Mr Vincent Sodengi, said the arrest was due to intensified surveillance at Kaskadi in Bassa area.

According to him, “We decided to increase surveillance around that area due to incessant reports of nefarious acts received from NNPC depot in Jos.

“The area had been a flashpoint of vandalism and we had to strategise to get at the suspects.

“After a careful study of their activities, we were able to apprehend these five men here.”

The commandant said the suspects would be handed over to the appropriate authority for further investigation.

Sodengi, who decried the massive damage done by the vandals, said their activities had affected the state as fuel and diesel could no longer be pumped into Plateau State.

“It is a serious problem really; the moment these essentials are pumped in, informants will tell the vandals and they will vandalise the pipes to get the products,” he said.

He said three vehicles, 86 jerry cans and three drums of diesel ware recovered from the suspects.

He warned those engaged in the act to desist from it as his men were sure to get them.

The NSCDC boss called on traditional rulers in the area to sensitize their people on the dangers of vandalism which he described as national sabotage.
