Telecom giant MTN Nigerian has retained its lead as Nigeria’s number one Telecom Company. This was stated in the mid-year 2013 telecoms subscribers figures released yesterday by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) showed that MTN still has the highest number of customers while Globacom is second.

Airtel Nigeria lost the fight for the number two position in the mobile telephony market as its rival, Glo now has about four million ahead of it.
According to the latest operator and subscriber data released by NCC, MTN still retains its sustained lead in the telecoms market with more than eight million active lines higher than the combined subscribers of its two rivals: Glo and Airtel.

According to latest figures from the regulator, current subscriber base is slightly above 113 million. CEO, MTN Nigeria, Brett Goschen, said at the signing of USD3billion syndicated loan held recently that its subscriber has hit the 50 million mark. That is the largest chunk of the subscriber figures while the three other mobile operators, Airtel, Globacom and Etisalat, jostle for the remaining 63 million.

NCC said consistent with the liberalisation of the Nigerian telecommunications industry in year 2000, it has facilitated market entry through its transparent licensing processes for various communications services, adding that today, Nigeria is the fastest growing telecommunications market in Africa and it is noteworthy that the giant strides in the telecommunications industry over the last decade were the direct effects of enabling regulatory environment created by the Commission.

It said it acknowledges the resoluteness and commitment of the network operators towards the development of the telecommunications industry and will continue to partner with them as key stakeholders in further advancing the telecommunications market for the benefit of consumers and the entire industry.
