The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) yesterday granted bail to embattled Senator Bukola Saraki, over alleged fraud and embezzlement of funds when he held sway as Governor of Kwara state as well as Executive Director of the defunct Societe Generale Bank of Nigeria (SGBN).
Our correspondent learnt that the administrative bail was warranted by his scheduled visit to London, to attend to a relation who is said to be ill.
“He has been allowed to go again because he has some medical challenges.
“He is likely to travel out of the country because a family member of his is due for a medical operation in London. “We are allowing him to attend to that and then return to answer more questions,” EFCC’s spokesman, Wilson Uwujaren stated.
He did not disclose when Saraki is expected back in the country as, according to him, “I wouldn’t call it an administrative bail.
“He was just given that privilege to attend to that medical challenge and then return to face his interrogation.
“We should expect him very soon.”
It is also unclear whether EFCC will file charges against Saraki after the interrogation, as the EFCC has kept mum over that.
“You cannot preempt that. It is like somebody going to the hospital and after doctor’s diagnosis, you then ask if the person is going to undergo any surgery.
“It is the diagnosis that will determine if there will be surgery or if it is just medication.
“I cannot tell what comes next after the interrogation,” Uwujaren said.
With the usual practice of filing charges against high individuals by the EFCC and the number of years it takes before any conviction is secured, observers are worried that Saraki’s case might drag on like the rest, currently pending in many courts across the country.
The EFCC spokesman made frantic efforts in defending the Commission’s stance on filing of cases against accused persons and why some drag on for many years.
