The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is now in possession of 20 million permanent voter’s cards for 2015 general elections, its resident electoral commission in charge of Akwa Ibom State, Mr Gabriel Ada said on Thursday.

Speaking in Uyo at a stakeholders meeting organised by the commission, Ada observed that the voters’ card would gradually ease out temporary voter’s card currently in the voting system.

Asides the micro-chip with bio-data of every voter, other features of the permanent cards include a readable card that every registered voter would present at the polling unit as part of the prerequisites for voting.

“The equipment is designed to record the total number of people that are accredited and the total votes cast at each polling unit during elections,” he said. “This initiative would help to fashion out irregularities in the system and also check unhealthy activities of desperate politicians during election.”

He also revealed that the commission is undergoing strategic restructuring to enhance its operations. This restructuring includes the employment of more than 6,000 field officers to help institutionalise core values in the organisation.

Also speaking, Head of Department, Electoral Operation, INEC, Mr. Michael Odey said the commission had finalised plans to begin the delimitation of constituencies in the country. He therefore urged stakeholders to collaborate with the commission so that it can fulfil its obligations to the Nigerian people.
