Former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, may have been nursing the dream of dumping the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) a second time.<\/p>\n

Just like previously when he teamed up with former Governor Bola Tinubu of Lagos to form the defunct Action Congress (AC), he may be coming up with a new party, the Peoples Democratic Movement to be carved out of the present but crisis stricken Peoples Democratic Party (PDP.<\/p>\n

Though Atiku has said he remains in the PDP, but he has also confirmed the proposed break-up in the PDP saying members of the PDM, a major structure within the party which he leads, is planning to become a political party.<\/p>\n

The PDM has been a powerful force and creating a lot of impact in the political landscape of the country. It was founded and coordinated by the late Shehu Yar’Adua, who was the country’s second in command while General Olusegun Obasanjo was Head of State.<\/p>\n

After the death of Shehu Yar’Adua, the responsibility of heading the PDM rested on Atiku, Shehu’s political godson. Its impact was made within the PDP when it became the force that produced Obasanjo in 1999.<\/p>\n

Garba Shehu, the media aide to the former Vice President, in a statement on behalf of his boss, recalled that the PDM platform, which was founded by late General Shehu Yar\u2019Adua, “provided the impetus for his impressive performance across the country during the September 1992 presidential primaries, which were later cancelled by the military regime.<\/p>\n

“The late Gen. Yar\u2019Adua came close to becoming President, thanks to the formidable PDM structure.<\/p>\n

“In 1999, the PDM was also in the forefront in the emergence of former President Obasanjo as PDP presidential candidate.<\/p>\n

“Political observers also noted that the choice of Atiku Abubakar as running mate to Obasanjo in 1999 was a recognition of the active role of the PDM platform in his victory.”<\/p>\n

Atiku, who has become frustrated in the PDP, said his acceptance of the decision of his associates to break up from the PDP is because he cannot stop them as they were adults and could take decisions on their own.<\/p>\n

He described the members of the PDM as adults with common interests who are thinking of expanding the political landscape of the country.<\/p>\n

While he was Vice President, Atiku was frustrated from contesting under the PDP by then President Obasanjo, who saw him as too desperate. Several court cases were instituted and won by the Atiku, but he was refused from flying the party’s flag.<\/p>\n

As a result, he left the PDP to form the Action Congress (AC), a party under which he contested and lost.<\/p>\n

AC soon won over some states particularly in the south-western part of the country. But Atiku’s move to settle his scores with his former boss created the problem he later had in the AC.<\/p>\n

He returned to the PDP later while the AC metamorphosed into the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) which is part of the newly formed All Progressive Congress (APC).<\/p>\n

Since his return, however, Atiku had been relegated in the PDP that is currently overwhelmed with internal wrangling. His name was omitted from the list of delegates<\/p>\n

He had since then complained through a petition to the PDP headquarters lamenting the poor reception, honour and respect he had been accorded since his return.<\/p>\n

To make matters worse, former President Obasanjo recently called him and Tinubu bad leaders.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
