Nigeria’s coach, Stephen Keshi, has reiterated his resolve to building his squad around players plying their trade in the domestic league.

Speaking in a sports programme on South Africa’s television, SuperSport, Keshi said the home-based players in the current Super Eagles squad have so far acquitted themselves.

“I’ve not hidden my intention to build the national team on players in the domestic league. And so far, the home-based players in my team, at the moment, have been quite impressive” he said.

“My plan is to raise a strong team of home-based players that would give the foreign-based players a good run for their shirts in the national team. The experiment seems to be working out the way I want it” Keshi added. For the umpteenth time the Super Eagles’ gaffer also spoke on the future of the team captain, Joseph Yobo, who has been left out of the squad since the last Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa won by Nigeria.

“Yobo is not the kind of player you bring back to the team and put him on the bench. I would love to have him in the team alongside other players like Osaze Osemwingie. But I don’t want to operate on sentiments.

“I’ve got a job to do. Nigerians gave me a job to do and I don’t want to disappoint them. I want my team to be competitive and that means that every player must fight for his shirt.
