Over 189 babies have been delivered by women displaced by the post-election violence in Kaduna state at the Mando Hajj Camp where they have sought asylum for the last 28 months.

Chairman of the Internally Displaced Persons(IDP) camps in Mando Kaduna state, Alhaji Sani Uba who spoke to newsmen said:

“We have between 189 and 200 of such children born in the camp within the past 28 months of staying in the facility”

Uba said some of the women came to the camp pregnant and were delivered of their pregnancy at the camp. He expressed worry that the children and others who were brought to the camp as a result of the violence were not in school due to the inability of their parents to pay their fees.

“The government only assisted when the victims of the crisis particularly from Zonkwa in Southern Kaduna were brought here. After the initial assistance, they stopped to giving us any form of help except for the likes of Dangote Foundation, NGOs and spirited Nigerians who have continued to give us succour,” he stated.

No fewer than 647 persons who took residents in the camps were offered financial assistance by the government and when asked to vacate the camps refused, saying the assistance was not sufficient to provide them necessary accommodation.
