Latest\u00a0 news from the Joint Task Force, JTF,\u00a0 today,\u00a0 claims that leader of the Boko Haram sect, Abubakar Shekau may have died of gunshot wounds sustained during an encounter at the Sambisa Forest camp of the sect in June this year.
Its \u00a0 claim was based \u00a0on intelligence reports \u00a0which indicated that Shekau was shot and seriously wounded in the encounter with its troops in the forests.
Spokesman of the JTF, Lieutenant Colonel Sagir Musa in a statement issued in Maiduguri \u00a0\u00a0said, \u201cAbubakar Shekau, the most dreaded and wanted Boko Haram terrorist leader \u00a0may have died of gunshots wound received in an encounter with JTF troops in one of their camps at Sambisa Game Reserve Forests on 30th June, 2013\u201d.
Sagir explained that Shekau was mortally wounded in the encounter and was sneaked into Amitchide\u2014a border community in Cameroun Republic for treatment from which he never recovered.
\u201cIt is greatly believed that Shekau might have died between 25th July to 3rd August, 2013, he was reported to have masterminded the kidnap of the seven French citizens and that of the Elder statesman, Alhaji (Dr) Shettima Ali Monguno in addition to many murders of Islamic and Christian cleric in Northern Nigeria\u201d, Sagir said.
He also revealed that Shekau was until his death, responsible for bombings of many places of worship and public buildings including the Police\u00a0 and United Nations (UN) Headquarters in Abuja.
National Mirror \u00a0gathered \u00a0that \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Abubakar Shekau, \u00a0\u00a0took over from Mohammed Yusuf who was killed in Maiduguri in the \u00a02009 uprising.
The JTF had earlier \u00a0placed a bounty of N50 million on Shekau with the \u00a0\u00a0United States of America adding another\u00a0 \u00a0$ 7million.
The recent video released on August 13 by the purported sect leader according to Sagir \u201cwas dramatised by an impostor to hoodwink the sect members to continue with the terrorism and to deceive the undiscerning minds of the public\u201d.<\/p>\n
