• WHO, others task countries on local research

BORNO and Yobe states account for nearly half of all Wild Polio Virus (WPV) cases in Nigeria in 2013 with about 35 per cent of children in these states remaining under-immunised, according to the Weekly Polio Update.

Meanwhile, the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the Nigerian Institute for Medical Research (NIMR) Yaba, Lagos, at the weekend called on countries to continue investing in local research in order to develop a system of universal health coverage tailored to each individual country’s situation.

The report published by the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) at weekend, compares to other high-risk states of northern Nigeria such as Kano, Jigawa, Katsina and Kaduna, where fewer than 20 per cent of children remain under-immunised.

Also, the Weekly Polio Update noted that the number of polio cases recorded in the country for 2013 has hit 43 with one new type one WPV (WPV1) case reported in the past week. “It is the most recent WPV1 case in the country and had onset of paralysis on July 23 from Borno.”

To tackle the situation, the Federal Government, through the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), will in September hold the next sub-national Immunisation Plus Days (IPDs) across northern states.

Executive Director, NPHCDA, Dr. Ado Gana Mohammed, said targeted approaches are being implemented in those Borno and Yobe councils where access is hampered due to insecurity. However, he said, the majority of councils in both states continue to participate during campaigns.

Mohammed said the Polio Emergency Operation Centre (PEOC) in Abuja has intensified 24 hours monitoring and surveillance of the 12 high-risk states of Borno, Yobe, Katsina, Bauchi, Kaduna, Kebbi, Sokoto, Zamfara, Jigawa, Kano and Niger with at least two Monitoring and Accountability (M&A) officers assigned to each state.

He said, besides Abuja, the PEOC has also established centres in Kano, Katsina, Kaduna, Sokoto, Borno and Yobe and plans to extend to the other six high-risk states before the end of the year.

Director General of the WHO, Dr. Margaret Chan, made the call at the weekend during the launch of the “World Health Report 2013: Research for Universal Health Coverage.”

She said with universal health coverage, countries could help ensure that citizens obtain the health services they need without suffering financial hardship when paying for them.

Chan described universal coverage as “the single most powerful concept that public health has to offer.”

She added: “Universal coverage is the best way to cement the health gains made during the previous decade. It is a powerful social equaliser and the ultimate expression of fairness.”

The report shows how countries, when developing a system for universal health coverage, can use research to determine what health issues should be addressed, how a system should be structured and how to measure progress according to their specific health situations.
