MINISTER of Works, Mike Onolememen, has debunked media report that the Federal Ministry of Works paid N52 billion for the palliative works on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

According to the minister, a total sum of N1.1 billion was spent for the job.

Speaking yesterday in Abuja, Onolememen explained that about N620 million was paid to Julius Berger Nigeria Plc for the first section while about N522 million was paid to Reynolds Construction Company (RCC) for the second section of the expressway.

He noted that the Section One which traverses Lagos to Shagamu interchange is a six-lane dual carriage way with a fly-over at the Redeem Christian Church of God (RCCG) junction while the Section Two will maintain the existing four lanes with rehabilitation of six fly-overs.

Onolememen, who said that the construction of road depends on the design of pavement, specifications of materials, bills of engineering measurement and evaluation, added that the ministry has developed new innovations that would help make Nigerian roads more durable.

The minister listed the innovations as the use of Macadam Base, Bitumen Emotion and Polymer Bitumen that are meant to increase the lifespan of the nation’s roads longer than what it used to be. These materials were said to have been used on the newly reconstructed Benin-Ore road due to the perennial failure on the alignment.

The minister expressed the hope that with the current progress of work, coupled with funding from the SURE-P, the Abuja-Lokoja road should be completed by 2014.

He further assured the public that steps are being taken towards the realisation of the Second Niger Bridge. According to him, two federal roads are being redesigned, namely the Baro-Kachia-Agai road and Ikorodu-Shagamu road.
