ABOUT 1000 houses collapsed on Sunday in three communities in two councils of Zamfara State following a ravaging flood caused by torrential rain.<\/p>\n

  Talata Mafara community, the home of Governor Abdulaziz Abubakar Yari recorded the highest causalities as over 500 houses collapsed, while over 400 others were destroyed in Birnin Yaro and Badarawa villages in Shinkafi council of the state.<\/p>\n

 The Guardian gathered that there was no live lost and the State Emergency Management Agency (ZEMA) has deployed its officials to the affected communities with a view to ascertaining the exact number of people and houses affected by the flood.<\/p>\n

  According to a source, the flood, which occurred following a heavy downpour, which lasted for over 24 hours, submerged mostly mud houses in the communities.<\/p>\n

  When he visited the affected communities in Talata Mafara council, the State Acting Governor, who is also the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Sanusi Garba Rikiji, expressed shock over the incident and urged the victims to take the disaster in good faith.<\/p>\n

  Rikiji said that the ZEMA officials were in the area to carry out an assessment of the losses caused by the flood.<\/p>\n

  Also speaking on the incident, the Emir of Talata Mafara, Alhaji Bello Barmo, described the disaster as divine, but warned people against building houses on the waterways.<\/p>\n

  Barmo called for the clearing of the drainages as a means of avoiding future occurrence.<\/p>\n
