From YINKA FABOWALE, Ibadan

Nigeria’s break-up depends on individuals and not on the negative predictions of foreigners, former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon ,has said.

The statesman said it was incumbent on every Nigerian to promote its unity and shun any divisive tendencies.

He spoke yesterday in Ibadan, Oyo State capital where he inaugurated the newly-built Prayer Tower of the Gethsemane Prayers Ministry International (GPMI), headed by Rev. Moses Aransiola, the National Director of Nigeria Prays, Gowon is the promoter.

Gen. Gowon expressed optimism that Nigeria would surmount its current political, socio-religious crises and other challenges, which had threatened its cohesion and integrity, despite the pessimism of some members of the international community, including the American and French governments.

His words: “I don’t believe this will happen; even France has said the same thing in the past, that we will break up before 2014, and yet, we still stand as one. Every Nigerian should stand up against such claims, and if every one of us believes that it will not happen, then it will not. So, I believe God will not allow such to happen. Nigeria Prays is really praying against such and that was part of the reason why this group came into existence.

“Nigerians, both at home and abroad, are very concerned about this entire crisis confronting this nation and we believe that only prayer can solve it. If you love Nigeria the way I love Nigeria, and if I love Nigeria the way you do, and have faith in her, then, we shall overcome”.

On politicians heating up the polity ahead of the 2015 elections, the elder statesman said: “They are just over ambitious politicians and they should be ignored by all Nigerians. Those types of politicians are spelling doom for the nation, and Nigerians need to be careful. Politicians should not be selfish in all they do, but should protect the interests of every Nigerian at heart, instead of amassing wealth unjustly; they should share the country’s resources equally and ensure the development of the country.

Speaking on Boko Haram, Gowon said:” God does not answer the prayer of human beings the very moment they want it. We have had all this type of crisis in the past and only if Nigerians can pray fervently well, sooner or later, this country will be free from all these challenges. God has heard our cry and will surely answer, but Nigerians too should stand up as one and intercede on all the crises rocking this nation, that is when God will uproot all the leaders that have evil intention against this country. Nigerians too need to desist from creating problems which they cannot solve and stop blaming God for their shortcomings”.

He commended the National Coordinator of Nigeria Prays and General Overseer of GPMI, Rev Aransiola for building the seven-storey edifice which, he said would be a source of blessing to Nigerians, particularly those who pray in it.

Rev. Aransiola, together with senior pastors of the ministry, then conducted the former head of state round the complex, which included a church auditorium, prayer tower and offices.
