Governor Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun State yesterday lowered the flag of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) and hoisted that of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to announce the birth of the new party in the state.

At the launch of the APC held at the Ake Palace playing ground in Abeokuta, chairmen of the defunct political parties that formed the new party addressed supporters one after the other.

Addressing the supporters, Amosun praised APC national leaders such as Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, Gen. Mohammadu Buhari and Aremo Olusegun Osoba, among others for their vision for forming the new party.

The governor, who described Ogun as the home of democracy, said the formation of APC marked the first time ever in the history of Nigeria when progressives would come under one party.

He also assured the supporters and other stakeholders that APC would not disappoint Nigerians by providing good governance for them. Amosun, however, flayed political opponents for claiming that formula for position sharing would tear the new party apart.

Reiterating that APC would always continue to agree on issues for the benefit of Nigeria’s development, the governor said Ogun State, in particular, would always set the necessary templates for development in the party. Former chairman of defunct CPC in Ogun, Kunle Mudashiru; one of the national officers of the defunct ANPP, Wasiu Olalekan as well as the Interim Chairman of the party in the state, Tajudeen Bello, all vowed that their merger would defeat the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2015 general elections.
