The Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Mr. Olusegun Aganga, has formally launched the Nigeria Trade Hub, a web-based solution of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) for facilitating cross-border commerce.

The portal is expected to create an opportunity for increased competition and share trade information.

Also launched was the Nigeria’s Import, Export and Transit Process Manual, which has the purpose to make trading more predictable and sustainable through the single window approach.

The Coordinating Minister for the Economy and Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, said improving the country’s business environment remained key to President Goodluck Jonathan’s Transformation Agenda, to address the regulatory bottlenecks which had often contributed to cost of doing business.

She said the NTH was a useful step towards improving trade facilitation in the economy as it would create an enabling environment to harmonise, simplify procedures for cross border transactions.

The minister said the innovation would further reduce delays associated with cross border trade and enhance “our goal of 48-hour clearance at the ports.”

Represented at the occasion by the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Finance, Mrs. Anastasia Daniel Nwaobia, Okonjo-Iweala said if effectively utilised, the trade hub would reduce cost of doing business.

Meanwhile, Aganga, who commended the NCS for its foresight, said the introduction of the solution was apt, given that the country’s business environment had been adjudged to be unfriendly, uncompetitive and uncoordinated.

Giving his address, the Comptroller-General of Customs, Abdullahi Inde Dikko, said the new portal and its accompanying process manual would offer invaluable guide and reliable reference tools to traders, who have legitimate and compliant businesses to conduct.

He added that the development was expected to usher in a new regime of trade facilitating in a corruption-free environment.
