The Anambra State chapter of the All Progressive Congress, APC, yesterday frowned at the alleged shoddy preparation that characterised the ongoing voters’ review exercise and registration in the state.

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, had last Monday commenced the continuous voters’ registration exercise geared towards conducting a smooth gubernatorial election on November 16.

However, the APC, which reacted on how INEC is handling the exercise, said it is sad that the registration was tainted by lack of adequate security and registration materials, as well as inadequate key personnel and computers in key polling units in Nkpor, Obosi and other communities.

In a statement issued yesterday on behalf of the APC by the state Publicity Secretary of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, Okelo Madukife, and made available to journalists in Awka, the party stated that reports reaching it showed that while the exercise was smooth in some places, others areas recorded serious teething problems, identifying the areas where there are hitches to include: Onitsha North, Onitsha South, Ogbaru and Idemili North local government areas. Shedding light on its findings, the APC contended that “details before us indicate that pages of INEC papers were torn off by unknown persons in Ogidi.

This was easy because these booths were unmanned by INEC up till 12 noon in some cases, leading people to act without direction.

The INEC machines and computers sent to Nkpor and Obosi were dysfunctional, leading to prospective voters coming to the centres and returning home without accomplishing their mission. We also discovered that only one machine apiece was provided to cover each of those densely populated areas of the state.”

Saying that even in Awka, the state caopital, the situation is same, as many polling units were witnessing low patronage due to low level of awareness on the exercise, the APC consequently urged INEC to step up its level of public information on the voters’ registration exercise in the state and also tighten its field supervision to ensure that those who should benefit from the exercise are not denied these rights.

The party also urged INEC and the Police to ensure that enhanced and comprehensive security arrangement was put in place to ensure the success of the exercise.

It said: “We advise that our elites and leaders should educate those who are misguided in tearing off INEC pasted registers to recognise that INEC is not an opposition party, but an umpire which deserves the cooperation of all to succeed,” adding that it hopes that in the days ahead, the exercise would witness an improvement.
