From Ayodele Samuel & Mariam Nurudeen, Lagos

The Lagos state Taskforce on Environmental and Special Offences yesterday impounded a cash loaded police registered bullion van and arrested the driver for violating the road traffic law 2012.
The driver of the cash loaded van with registration number PF 4582 SPY, Mr. Joseph Edo, 50, was later arraigned at the Special Offences Court, Alausa.
Speaking in an interview, Edo said that, “when I left a commercial bank at Alausa Secretariat, Ikeja, I drove towards my normal route.
“But immediately I heard a gunshot, I had to option than to drive against the traffic.
“And this was based on my experience last year when one of our officers was killed in a gun battle with armed robbers.
“At that time when I was apprehended, I don’t know if I was the only driver who heard the shot and drove against the traffic.
However Chairman of the task force, Chief Superintendent of Police, Bayo Sulaimon, who led his team on their usual morning patrol, said that the driver was caught while driving against the traffic at about 12 pm on ACME road, Ikeja.
He added that a police officer escorting the van was also apprehended for not reprimanding the driver when he drove against the traffic.
“He had no reason to have done that because the road was free and we tried to stop him but he sped off.
“He attempted to hit me and some of my men but we were able to arrest him and the police escort while we seized the bullion van with the cash and moved it to our premises in Alausa.”
He explained that the fact that they were involved in the movement of cash did not exempt them from the law, warning erring drivers would be made to face the wrath of the law.
