Eight persons, all members of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Abia State, died on Tuesday in an auto crash in Enugu while returning home after conducting the party’s ward congress in Anambra State.

Others also sustained varying degree of injuries during the crash. The victims include aides to the state party Chairman, Chief Emma Nwaka and some members of staff of the party’s secretariat as well as ward chairmen.

They were said to have worked as auxiliary staff in the party’s wards congress in Anambra State in preparation for the governorship election on November 16, 2013.

National Mirror gathered that the bodies of the deceased have been brought down to Umuahia and deposited at the Federal Medical Centre, in the town.

Meanwhile, Governor Theodore Orji has directed that two ambulances be dispatched to Enugu to bring down the survivors of the accident to Umuahia for proper medical attention.

The bus that was carrying 16 passengers was said to have skidded off the road and plunged into a ditch. Five of the passengers were said to have died on the spot while three others died later.

It was also gathered that four of the victims hailed from Isuikwuato Local Government Area of the state, the home council for state’s party chairman.

Publicity Secretary of the party in the state, Mr. Uchechi Ogbuka, confirmed the incident and described it as a tragedy. As at the time of filing this report, the PDP flag is flying at half mask in honour of the deceased.
