A Dentist at the National Hospital, Abuja, Dr Seyi Lojede, has said excessive sugar, sweets and starchy food consumption, predisposed people to tooth decay
Lojede told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja that tooth decay was also called “dental caries’’ or a cavity.
He said that for tooth decay to take place, the tooth structure, the substrate which is the food substance, bacteria and time must be present.
“So if your tooth is not well formed and laid down, there is a tendency of having tooth decay.
“When you consume food that are high in carbohydrates and soft drinks, the bacteria in plaque turns the carbohydrates into the energy it needs by producing acid at the same time.
“When the acid makes contact with your tooth, with time, it creates a little hole, leading the bacteria into your tooth. ‘’
The dentist said that the bacteria would always fight to stay within the environment of the mouth because they died if they got into the stomach.
According to Lojede, if one does not brush the tooth at night, the food particles left in the mouth creates an environment for the bacteria to make more holes in the tooth.
He said that eating foods high in carbohydrates and taking soft drinks, particularly in between meals, also increases the risk of tooth decay.
He also said that smokers were also at risk of having tooth decay.
“Saliva helps to keep the surface of your teeth clean but tobacco interferes with the production of saliva and once the saliva is not sufficient, it could lead to tooth decay.’’
For proper oral hygiene, Lojede advised the public to brush at least twice daily and visit the dentist twice a year.
“You can easily prevent tooth decay by brushing twice daily, flossing your teeth regularly, see your dentist for teeth cleaning and checkups and avoid food high in sugar.’’(NAN)
