Chief Anyim Pius Anyim, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, has urged Nigerian editors to assist in the transition of the country from oil dependency to other sectors.
In a goodwill message to the 9th All Nigerian Editors Conference, organised by the Nigerian Guild of Editors and the Delta State Government on Thursday in Asaba, Delta State, Anyim noted that the conference was timely.
He said the theme for discussion: “Nigeria Beyond Oil: Role of Editors”, was apt especially now that the revenue from oil has started to drop.
He noted that this was the first time any organisation was presenting the topic for discussion in the country and added that the editors had thought it wise to come up with the issue for discussion.
He charged the meeting to deliberate and come up with workable solutions to address the challenges of transiting the country from its present status.
He said: “Whether we like it or not, we are transiting from an oil Nigeria to non oil Nigeria and if we fail in this duty, the society will pay for it.
“What makes Nigeria thick is today found everywhere in Africa.
“This means that the forces of demand and supply will force the price to fall.”
Anyim said he was confident that the speakers on the occasion would do justice to the challenges and provide the country with a road map to addressing the problems.
He said that the editors and the lawyers have a lot to do in reforming the country, adding that he was sure that at the end of this meeting, he was sure it would mark the beginning of a better future for the country.
Anyim charged the media not to compromise but to remain resolute as true patriots
The Delta Governor State, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan, has vowed to reposition the state to become a regional economic power.
Uduaghan, in his paper at the conference, said his government was also building the future of the state beyond oil.
He said the economic development was hinged on its access to the sea, airports, roads and many urban and coastal areas in the state.
He said: “What we know and which is why we are so determined in the direction we are pushing is that it is clear that economic development in Delta is going to be shaped greatly by its location.
“And that is, we are an emerging regional power.
“With access to the sea, the Warri seaport, and with two airports, several dualised roads on a strategic network and, of course, with our two great poles, Warri and Asaba, and many urban and riverine areas.
“The people of Delta must feel they have a government that cares about them.
“They must feel the impact of government wherever they reside.
“We were careful to avoid anything remotely suggesting lopsided development.”
Uduaghan said as part of government’s plans to build the state beyond oil, it was building a 250 megawatts power plant at Oghareki to be inaugurated next year.
He said government invested in the Nigerian Independent Power Plants and were attracting international partners on renewable energy.
The governor also said the Asaba airport project was nearing completion and when completed, it would be one of the best in the country.
He said the airport would also play a strategic role in government’s plans to move the state beyond oil.
