MEDICAL and Health Workers Union of Nigeria has compelled the leadership and members of the union at National Orthopaedic Hospital, Dala, Kano to join the nationwide industrial action or face the wrath of the union.

Besides, patients at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital Kano (AKTH), are now lamenting their neglect by medical workers as a result of the ongoing strike.

Although Assistant Director, Public Relations at AKTH told The Guardian that some facilities would remain open for emergency services as long as the strike lasts, patients at the Accident and Emergency (A&E) Unit have cried out over poor services being rendered by the few senior staff on duty.

A relative of one of the critically-ill patients, Abubakar Aminu, lamented the impact of the strike on his brother. “We have not received any medical attention since morning. As you can see, the nurses are not working and the few of them here are not enough. I beg the government to settle the workers to save lives here,” he said.

Asmau Adamu is the wife of Alhaji Hakibu Suraj, who is equally lying critically sick in the A&E Unit. She said: “I want to appeal on both union and government to resolve their problems. We are not satisfied with the situation.”

Although specialized baby care unit at AKTH remained open for medical attention, a Principal Nursing Officer in charge of the unit, Brai Ann complained that the work was too much for the few senior staff available.

“As you can see, about 10 nurses are supposed to work in this very sensitive unit, but with the strike, only three of us are here. In fact, we have to clean the place on our own since our cleaners too are on strike,” Brai said.

Meanwhile, the state secretary of the union, Comrade Auwal Yusuf Kiyawa, who led members of the state executive to National Orthopaedic Hospital, ordered members to down their tools. Chairman of the local chapter, Karibu Lawal had earlier on Wednesday told journalists that members would not join their counterparts nationwide due to existing local understanding with the management of the hospital.

Kiwaya, who spoke with reporters after the union’s inspection, noted that members at Orthopaedic Hospital have been directed to stop work in compliance with the national directive.

“We are here to ensure maximum compliance with the strike and the state leadership would not tolerate any act of sabotage. We are aware of the local issues between the local executives and the management but that would not prevent the strike action anymore,” Kiyawa insisted.
