A Northern political leader and former presidential candidate of the defunct National Republican Convention in the aborted Third Republic, Alhaji Bashir Tofa, has traced the problems confronting the nation to alleged weakness of President Goodluck Jonathan to take major decisions on issues related to governance.

The former chairman of the elders committee of the defunct All Nigeria Peoples Party, (ANPP) told Saturday Mirror in an interview in Kano yesterday that the president had failed to execute properly his responsibilities as the leader of the Nigerian people, resulting in most of the socio-political and economic problems bedevilling the country .

“President Jonathan is too quiet, too patient, and too careless; he has to realise that he is the leader, nobody can execute his responsibilities for him, they are all his and his duty is not just to sit down and keep quiet and allow people to mess him up; he has to do certain things himself. He must learn to reconcile with other people himself directly, he should not allow other people to represent him and do things that he is supposed to do himself,” Tofa said.

The veteran politician argued further that if he were President Jonathan, “I will list all the major issues that needed to be addressed and see those that I can personally deal with and go ahead and deal with them.

Like the issues affecting the governors, I will call them personally, hear from them what their problems are and see how to get them resolved. “The president should try and look at all these issues of corruption, bunkering and others. He should list them down and plot a strategy that will deal with the situation including dealing with anyone involved in such crime irrespective of position”.

He advised the President to use the remaining part of his tenure to free his conscience by genuinely working towards radical transformation of the country, pointing out that failure to do so would lead him into more serious trouble as everything is blamed on him.

“I must say personally that Jonathan, from the depth of my heart, is a good man but he is weak he allows people to mess him up, he doesn’t talk, he doesn’t act and I think he has to take action. That is his problem, a lot of his people are messing him up, I have said this a lot of times that Jonathan has to do away with most of his advisers and reshape his cabinet.,” he said.
