The National Orientation Agency has sensitized traders in Ajado Market in Iseyin Local Government Area, Oyo State, on the importance of the Freedom of Information Act.

Speaking during the workshop at the weekend, the agency’s Chief Mobilisation and Orientation officer for the council, Mrs Fatimo Adigun, said the FoI Act was important for all Nigerians, according to a statement on Sunday.

Adigun said the Act made public records and information more freely available, and provide public the right to access to such information and records.

She said, “We decided to come to the market because they are the citizens at the grassroots, and we need to increase their awareness on the FoI Act.

“The agency also intends to increase transparency in government. When people are aware that they can ask questions, their level of consciousness will increase.

“We also want traders to know their rights as well as civic responsibilities expected of them at all times.”

Adigun said the agency would organise similar workshop in six different communities of the council before the end of August.

The head of the market, Alhaji Azeez Mudashiru, said, “The truth is that we are all afraid to ask questions about government activities. This education will enable us ask about our resources.”
