Tragedy struck at the weekend as three children in Lotugbene community of Bayelsa State died after allegedly drinking water from a river polluted by the rig operations of an oil company in the area.

Reports attribute the death of the affected children, Osumayin Eniye, 7; Kpegbolo Oyadonbenfa, 5 and Boroyegha, 10, who were vomiting and stooling for a while, to cholera.

Apparently angered by the development, the chiefs and youths of the community have handed down a seven-day ultimatum to the company to dialogue with it or quit the area, as it could not guarantee the safety of its officials in the area afterwards.

It is alleged that the quality of water in Lotugbene was affected since October 6, 2011 when the oil company started drilling a rig and allegedly polluted the entire river in the process.

According to the leaders of the community, Chief Noel Babazouwei and Wilfred Ikere, all efforts to reach the company authorities had proved abortive, as the company had remained incommunicado.

They said they had also petitioned the Presidency, National Assembly, the state Governor Henry Dickson and the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs on their plight, but no respite yet.

The river is the only source of drinking water to the community.
