Fida’u or ransom prayers: The stand of the shari’ah
By Husain Zakariyya Yawale
Qur’an says: “Every soul that hath sinned, if it possessed all that is on earth, would fain give it in ransom: They would declare (their) repentance when they see the penalty: but the Judgment between them will be with justice, and no wrong will be done unto them.” [Yunus: 54]
Anas bin Malik narrated that the Prophet said, “Allah will say to the person who will have the minimum punishment in the Fire on the Day of Resurrection, ‘If you had wealth equal to whatever is on the earth, would you ransom yourself (from the punishment) with it?’ He will reply, Yes! Then Allah will say, ‘I asked you a much easier thing than this while you were in the backbone of Adam, that is, not to worship others besides Me, but you refused and insisted to worship others besides Me.” [Bukhari: Book 8: Volume 76: Hadith 562]
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful. All Praise is due to Allah! We praise Him and we seek help from Him. We ask forgiveness from Him. We repent to Him; and we seek refuge in Him from our evils and bad deeds. Anyone who is guided by Allah, is indeed guided; and anyone who has been left astray, will find no one to guide him. I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship but Allah, the Only One without any partner; and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and final messenger to mankind. May the peace and blessing of Allah be upon His last and final Apostle, his Household, his companions and all his followers until the end of time.
The Qur’an testifies that humankind have been the same throughout time and space. They were, and are still the same, culturally, till the end of time. They will continue to share the same fears and tribulations of the Unseen and the repugnance of their environment; those natural phenomenon which still defy their control or domination! The prehistoric man, as a result of acceptance of his incapacitation, started worshiping fearsome creatures without any guidance by setting for himself and his fellows certain fictitious rites, initiations and celebrations as mollification. He later called these creatures gods, which were usually represented in curved stones, wooden or irons statues. His fears and apprehensions became calamities of various degrees sometime culminating into fatality. Probably his rituals for the dead relatives were related to getting it well integrated, and accepted by its ancestors who perished many centuries ago. It may also be associated with comforting the ancestors to accept the arrival of new dead souls, should any violation or wrongs were perpetrated to the them whilst it was alive. Thus, the entire scheme of any type of rituals by traditionalist and polytheist priests were usually based on surmisals, conjectures and suppositions which they fabricate or confabulate out of their whimsies and impulses to defraud their ignorant acolytes and followers. In most cases their paralanguages are only groundless tongues without any rational meanings.
In many parts of the world, different cultures and religions have various rituals regarding spiritual redemption or rescue from torment of their dead in the hands of their ancestors in great beyond. Some rites are still very cruel in their routines as well as barbaric in conjectures of communicating with the spiritual worlds on behalf of the deceases’ families. The whole aim for all these unfounded rituals was to rescue or ransom the soul of the dead from the awaiting torment or anguish in the great beyond.
In Judaism for example, the culture of ransom or redemption was sensual both in belief and orientation, according to their creeds. Christianity, similarly, ”teaches that the death of Christ was a ransom, usually said to have been paid to Satan, in satisfaction of his just claim on the souls of humanity as a result of sin. Christian philosopher Robin Collins in his book Understanding Atonement: A New and Orthodox Theory’ summarized it as follows: “Essentially, this theory claimed that Adam and Eve sold humanity over to the Devil at the time of the Fall; hence, justice required that grace pay the Devil a ransom to free us from the Devil’s clutches. God, however, tricked the Devil into accepting Christ’s death as a ransom, for the Devil did not realize that Christ could not be held in the bonds of death. Once the Devil accepted Christ’s death as a ransom, this theory concluded, justice was satisfied and God was able to free us from Satan’s grip”.
The Qur’an also relates to us the belief of the pagan Arabs, as well as their inner motives in worshipping their numerous gods and goddesshood: “They serve, besides Allah, things that hurt them not nor profit them, and They say: “These are Our intercessors with Allah.” say: “Do ye indeed inform Allah of something He knows not, In the heavens or on earth?- glory to Him! and far is He above the partners They ascribe (to Him)!” [Yunus: 18]
And: “Is it not to Allah that sincere devotion is due? but those who take for protectors other than Allah (Say): “We only serve them In order that They may bring us nearer to Allah.” truly Allah will judge between them In that wherein They differ. but Allah guides not such As are false and ungrateful.” [az-Zumar: 3]
From these verses we can clearly construe that idol worshippers worship it for the sole reason of interceding and protecting them from the awaiting tribulation hereafter. That is to say all sacrificial offerings to the gods here are ransom, meant to rescue them from the torment of fire.
Thus, “Fidda’u” or “Fidau”, or whatever it may be called is only a residue of either paganism, Judaism or ‘Christianism’, or the combination of all isms, going by their theological history. In Islam, ransom has never been an issue with any consequence in all its scheme of theology. The Qur’an is very explicit on the impossibility of offering to Allah any material as ransom in alternative to punishment, regardless of its value and quantity. Allah confirms this possition in several verses thus:
“Then guard yourselves against a Day when one soul shall not avail another nor shall intercession be accepted for her, nor shall compensation be taken from her, nor shall anyone be helped (from outside)”. [al-baqarah: 48]
And: “Every soul that hath sinned, if it possessed all that is on earth, would Fain give it In ransom: They would declare (their) repentance when They see the penalty: but the Judgment between them will be with justice, and no wrong will be done unto them.” [Yunus: 54]
Furthermore, a hadith expatiated the stand in the following sublime words.
Anas bin Malik Allah’s Prophet used to say, “A disbeliever will be brought on the Day of Resurrection and will be asked. “Suppose you had as much gold as to fill the earth, would you offer it to ransom yourself?” He will reply, “Yes.” Then it will be said to him, “You were asked for something easier than that (to join none in worship with Allah (i.e. to accept Islam, but you refused).” [Bukhari: Book 8 : Volume 76 : Hadith 546 ]
The case is where a person wasted his sojourn in this world as a loyal servant of Allah, and worshipped other gods beside Allah, or associated a fellow being with Him, or think someone has an immutable powers to intercede, pay ransom or compensation in lieu of his or her condemnation before Allah. That is to say, if anyone made the mistake of his life by not submitting to Allah in devotion, and in line with what was revealed to Muhammad (PBUH) during his life time, such a person has fall into the abyss of eternal torment.
When a person misused his chances of believing in and worship Allah in this world, will not have another chance of returning after death to restyle his faults. Nor those who consider the life of this world a passing amusement and pleasure devoid of any purpose. This wish will never come to reality, as no respite of amendment will be offered for whatever reason. Allah says:
“Leave alone those who take their Religion to be mere play and amusement, and are deceived by the life of This world. but proclaim (to them) This (truth): that every soul delivers itself to ruin by its own acts: it will find for itself no Protector or intercessor except Allah. if it offered every ransom, (or reparation), none will be accepted: such is (the end of) those who deliver themselves to ruin by their own acts: They will have for drink (only) boiling water, and for punishment, one Most grievous: for They persisted In rejecting Allah.” [al-Ma’idah: 70]
The Qur’an tells us such situation where the unbelievers would wish another chance to redeem their misconstruals. The following verses are meant for us here before the day when knowledge will cease to be of any importance.
“Do They just wait for the final fulfilment of the event? on the Day the event is finally fulfilled, those who disregarded it before will say: “The apostles of Our Lord did indeed bring true (tidings). have we no intercessors Now to intercede on Our behalf? or could we be sent back? then should we behave differently from Our behaviour In the past.” In fact They will have lost their souls, and the things They invented will leave them In the lurch.” [a-A’araf: 53]
“Those whose lives the angels take In a state of wrong-doing to their own; then would They offer submission (with the pretence),;We did no evil (knowingly); (the angels will reply), Nay, but Verily Allah knoweth all that ye did; So enter the gates of Hell, to dwell therein. Thus evil indeed is the abode of the arrogant.” [an-Nahl: 28-29]
“If only Thou couldst see when the guilty ones will bend low their heads before their Lord, (saying:) “Our Lord! we have seen and we have heard: Now then send us back (to the world): we will work righteousness: for we do indeed (now) believe.” [as- sajadah: 12]
In essence, what people do after the death of their parents, wives or husbands, sons or daughters in terms of inviting friends and relations on the third, seventh and fourtieth days to offer some ‘special prayers’ for the deceased as ransom or fidau due his or her lapses, remains an innovation or Bid’ah. The prayers is inconsequential in changing the past of dead. Allah will never accept a ransom from the families, friends and relations of a dead person if he or she did not pay his or her right dues to Allah when alive. No compensations or substitute for bad work done while alive, instead of a good one later.
In fact, the special fidau prayers which people consider in my country as Islamic, is really not Islamic in anyway! it is waste of money, time and above all null and void effort in a wrong direction. The Qur’an forewarns, thus:
“That man can have nothing but what He strives for; That (the fruit of) His striving will soon come in sight”. [an-Najm: 39-40]
That is to say, if the dead was righteaus while alive, to him or her his or her credit! The next verse brings that out clearly.
“Whoever works any act of righteousness and has Faith,- His endeavour will not be rejected: we shall record it In His favour”. [al-Anbiya’u: 94]
Similarly, Allah has given us a expansive liberty and freedom to choose to do good or bad while alive. Why after series of warnings and admonishing, and the flinging of several chances for repentance, can such a careless person be granted any compassion by proxy, and free of charge? Our chances of repentance is only during our life time. When we pass away, the chances become quiescent, dormant and frozen forever!
Thus, Allah, the Most High is above being lured by the foods, drinks and money given out to the beggar, the indigents and fraudulent mallams. let me say here and to be repeated anywhere anytime that those mallams or sheiks who persuade innocent relations of any dead person to spend money in vain ( not charity), are in fact, fraudulent, deceitful and dishonest in the name of religion (aklu-bid-deen)! Any insinuation to dupe any grieved Muslim after losing his loved one and abusing him by indirectly telling him that his decease is an inmate of hell-fire, to mercilessly again swindle him of what could have been spent mercifully in taking care of the widow and her orphans in many ways, such mallam are worse than merciless armed robbers in their heinous schemes.
In Islam, there is no any religious gathering in the name of asking Allah for any sympathy on behalf of a dead person after funeral services. There is no fidda’u or fidau or whatever prayers allowable in Shari’ah after burial rites. Indeed Islam has commanded us to pray for the repose of our dead in private and in the open, but not for a fee or bill. In our prayers (Salawats), at the break of our fasting, during pilgrimage, and any moment we remember them. Allah says:
“And those who came after them say: “Our Lord! forgive us, and Our brethren who came before us into the Faith, and leave not, In Our hearts, rancour (or sense of injury) against those who have believed. Our Lord! Thou art indeed full of kindness, Most Merciful.” [al-Hashr: 10]
Finally, let me conclude with this verse and invoke Allah to have mercy on all of us when we finally meet Him alone:
“O Our Lord! cover (Us) with Thy forgiveness – me, My parents, and (all) believers, on the Day that the reckoning will be established!” [Ibrahim: 41]

Military, Police Ring Abuja to Forestall Boko Haram Attack
•Deploy more personnel as army chief vows to wipe out terror group
•Security beefed up at N’Assembly
Deji Elumoye and Kingsley Nwezeh in Abuja
Abuja, Nigeria’s seat of power, is under a massive security cordon following threats of attacks by insurgents and the increasing wave of banditry in the contiguous states of Kaduna, Kogi, Nasarawa and Niger States, THISDAY’s investigation has revealed.
There has been a wave of kidnappings in the outskirts of the federal capital, notably Pegi, Tuganmaje and Kuje among others, which the police have battled in recent times.
The security situation in and around the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) was heightened by the pronouncement of the Niger State Governor, Mr. Sani Bello, that Boko Haram fighters who he said sacked 50 villages in the state and hoisted the terror group’s flag, were about two hours drive away from the FCT.
Security has also been beefed up at the National Assembly as operatives, yesterday, thoroughly screened every vehicle approaching the National Assembly complex in Abuja.
The deteriorating security situation nationwide prompted the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Prince Uche Secondus, to warn that the 2023 general election may not hold, demanding the declaration of a state of emergency as well as the convocation of a national conference.
However, the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Ibrahim Attahiru, yesterday restated the Nigerian Army’s determination to annihilate Boko Haram.
But the Governor of Katsina State, Hon. Bello Masari, cautioned against declaring a state of emergency, saying doing so isn’t the solution to combat the security challenges facing the country.
The security of the nation’s airports was also in focus yesterday as the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) said there was no threat to them.
THISDAY’s investigations showed increased presence of troops, police, Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) personnel and intelligence operatives at the three strategic entrances to the city notably, Keffi, Zuba and Gwagwalada.
More checkpoints were also mounted around Gwagwalada and Keffi.
THISDAY also observed increased intelligence deployment at the entrance and the borders of FCT with contiguous states.
Beyond the borders, there were more deployments and police patrols inside the city and increased intelligence deployments as well.
Security sources told THISDAY: “There are deployments here and there but they are routine. Alertness is key to a secure environment.”
It was also learnt that security agencies were involved in frenzied meetings throughout yesterday.
The meetings, coordinated by the office of the Chief of Defence Staff under the new joint operational strategy of the armed forces, were aimed at coordinating a joint response to possible threats of attack to the FCT.
“I understand the security teams have been meeting for some days now and if you look around you, you will notice that there are increasing patrols and numbers of security personnel. The threats are not been taken lightly,” a source said.
National Assembly workers, lawmakers and visitors also had a harrowing experience accessing the legislative complex due to heightened security in the area.
Security operatives thoroughly screened every vehicle approaching the National Assembly complex in Abuja, impeding both human and vehicular traffic.
The Sergeant-at-arm of the National Assembly and other security agencies supervised the operations, leading to huge traffic build-up inside the complex.
Legislative staff, visitors and lawmakers were seen patiently waiting for their cars to be searched so that they could go ahead with the business of the day.
Some staff and visitors at some point got tired of waiting and were seen alighting from their cars to trek from the gate to the complex.
Meanwhile, the ONSA has said there is no threat to the nation’s airports.
A statement by the Head of Strategic Communication, Mr. Zachari Usman, said the reports of threats to the airports were an internal correspondence of security threat assessment misconstrued as security threat to the airports.
PDP Demands State of Emergency
In a related development, the PDP National Chairman, Prince Uche Secondus, yesterday demanded the declaration of a state of emergency, warning that the 2023 general election might not hold if the federal government failed to tackle insecurity.
He called on the federal government to summon a national conference to address the spike in insecurity.
Secondus added that the national caucus of the party will meet today to discuss the state of the nation.
Addressing members of the National Executive Committee (NEC) in Abuja, Secondus said: “We are worried Abuja is not even safe. It is no longer politics. We got alert of plots to bomb and burn down our airports.
“We urge the federal government to declare a national state of emergency in security. There is the need to call a national conference to discuss the insecurity in the country.
“There may not be any election in 2023 in Nigeria due to insecurity. This government must listen to the people. The Buhari government should call a national confab to discuss security and state of the nation. It is no longer politics. This time we are not playing politics. Let’s keep politics aside and move the nation forward.”
He said the country had been grounded, regretting that there had been no matching response from the federal government.
Secondus said in the past, terrorism in the North was confined to the North-east, but with the report of Boko Haram occupying villages in Niger State, terrorism had spread to the North-central
“Herdsmen are also menacing in the West; gunmen causing havoc in the East; and the militants in the South; all killing, looting, raping, maiming and burning down homes. The situation is bad; Nigerians all over are living in fear,” he said.
The Senate Minority Leader, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, said the problem of Nigeria was outside of the PDP headquarters, while pledging the support of the Senate to the declaration of state of emergency in security.
Abaribe said he deliberately decided not to speak on the floor of the Senate but to allow the APC senators to speak so as to avoid being accused of giving a partisan colouration to the issue of insecurity.
He stated that only electoral reforms would give victory to the opposition party in the 2023 general election and ensure a democratic defeat of the APC-led federal government.
Also, the Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, Hon. Ndudi Elumelu, commended the NEC and the PDP leadership for their collective efforts at resolving the House leadership crisis.
The NEC meeting adopted the position of Secondus, calling on the federal government to convoke a national conference to discuss the state of insecurity in the country, according to a communiqué read by the National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Kola Ologbondiyan.
Army Chief Vows to Wipe Out Boko Haram
The army yesterday reiterated its commitment to wipe out Boko Haram.
Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt. Gen. Ibrahim Attahiru, told reporters in Maiduguri, Borno State that Boko Haram had been defeated in many encounters and would continue to be defeated until it’s annihilated from Nigeria.
“We will take on Boko Haram decisively, and we are committed to the focus of the operations, which is the total annihilation of Boko Haram from Nigeria,” he said.
The COAS, who was visiting the headquarters of Operation Lafiya Dole in Maiduguri for the fifth time since his appointment four months ago, said the visit was to boost the morale of the troops, reassure them and listen to any issues affecting them.
Earlier, the Theatre Commander of Operation Lafiya Dole, Maj. Gen. Farouq Yahaya, lauded the visit, which he said had continued to boost the morale of the troops.
“We are honoured, we are grateful, we are encouraged by those visits. You provided us guidance, logistics and other things we required. We are most grateful for those visits,” Yahaya said.
State of Emergency Won’t Solve Security Challenges, Says Masari
Katsina State Governor, Hon. Aminu Masari, has, however, said declaration of a state of emergency won’t solve the security challenges facing the nation.
Masari, who spoke yesterday with journalists after meeting with the Chief of Staff to the President, Prof. Ibrahim Gambari at the State House, Abuja stated that he was against the recent call by the House of Representatives for the declaration of a state of emergency in the security sector as it would not solve the problem.
According to him, declaring a state of emergency will not achieve the desired effect as the security structure and personnel to be used to execute the emergency are already overstretched in a bid to safeguard lives and property.

Attacks on S’East: We must explore all options of negotiation — Stakeholders urge Igbo
By Olasunkanmi Akoni
The people of the South East region have been urged to explore the power of negotiation and mutual settlement in the face of ongoing killings and security challenges in the zone because the east can not afford another war at present.
Stakeholders from the South-East geo-political zone made the remark on Thursday, at the unveiling of the book, “Igbo, 50 years after Biafra,” written by Special Adviser to Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Drainage Services, Joe Igbokwe, held at Ikeja G.R.A.
Speaking at the unveiling of the book, the chairman of the occasion, Mr. Cutis Adigba,
urged the people of the South-East to learn to build bridges across the country, so that they can realise their ambition of producing the next president of Nigeria.
Adigba urged leaders from the zone to discourage the move and agitation by some youths in the South East to go to war and secede out of Nigeria.

He said that Igbo have always found it difficult to rule Nigeria because they refused to build bridges across the six geo-political zones that made up Nigeria.
While describing the agitation as uncalled for, Adigba noted that after two decades that Nigeria returned to civil rule, the Igbo has predominantly identified with only one political party.
He maintained that remaining in one party can not advance the cause of the people of South East and cannot make them realise their objective of producing an Igbo man as president.
He maintained that the publisher of the book, Igbokwe played politics outside his state, so that the Igbo race can be integrated with one another race.
Adigba said the failure of the Igbo to reintegrate with other ethnic nationalities politically was responsible for the retrogression of the race in Nigerian politics.
Igbokwe, also addressing guests on the occasion, maintained that the Igbo are not advancing politically because they refused to be integrated into National politics, lamenting that, despite their success in business, they are not successful in playing politics at the national level.
Corroborating Dimgba, Igbokwe noted that there was the need for the Igbo people to stand up and build bridges so that their objective of producing the next president of Nigeria could be realised.
According to him: “I have decided to raise my voice, I hope my people will hear me while trying to quell the effect of the war, our people are spoiling for another war, mayhem is being unleashed in Igbo land, and there is palpable fear.
“Those who could speak have lost their voice, mindful of the consequences of their actions, I am calling on all Igbo leaders to speak up because all actions carry consequences, consequences of the silence will be too dastardly to sustain.
“Those silently supporting the wild wind should be careful or else they hand over to their children,” he said.
Igbokwe urged those spoiling for war to jettison their plan and embrace dialogue, urging them to learn from the South West region that despite the challenges faced after the annulment of the June 12, 1993, election, they did not go to war, and the region had the opportunity of producing two of her sons for presidential position in 1999.
“You have to build bridges to become president of Nigeria, but it is unfortunate the Igbo are burning bridges.”
Speaking at the event, Chief Uche Dimgba who is the coordinator of Igbo in All Progressives Congress, APC in Lagos, described Igbokwe as “a Frank, fearless and reliable leader, who based his views on issues and stand by his opinions, and we the Igbo have confidence in him and believe he can lead us aright.”
“He is a leader we Igbo believe in and we will follow him. If he can serve all the governors produced in Lagos State since 1999, he is a better man to follow because he possesses all the experience that can be of benefit to Igbo both at home and in the diaspora.”
